Running a Maxscript

3D Studio Max Maxscripts can be run in a variety of ways. This tutorial shows the simplest way of running a Maxscript. These instructions will work in any version of StudioMax but be warned, some maxscripts will only run in specific versions of StudioMax. Always save your work before running a maxscript you've never tested. First start StudioMax and go to your Command Panel, usually docked on the right. You can also open the Command Panel if it is closed by right-clicking on any non-button area of a tool panel and checking the panels you want to open.

In the Utilities rollout (under the Hammer icon), there is a button labeled Maxscript. Click this button to open the Maxscript panel. The panel will automatically load in a new rollout below. Click plus to open the rollout if it is closed. The rollout is labeled MAXScript. If you don't see the Maxscript button, click on the Sets button and choose 'Max Default' to restore your Utilities button choices. All of your utilities buttons can be customized to fit any MAX command or modifier.

Finally, inside the Maxscript rollout, choose the button Run Script. A File Browser window opens. Browse to the maxscript you want to run, usually the file will have the ".ms" extension in the name. Select the script and click the open button to run the script. Funny thing just happened while writing this tutorial. I just discovered that most versions of MAX have a file menu labeled MAXScript too. Under the MAXScript File menu are selections to Run, Open, and Create a maxscript. This saves you a few steps if you are running a simple script. Always remember that some maxscripts have no output. Running a script may appear to do nothing but actually do something quite drastic to your scene file. Research each maxscript you add to your library. Maxscript can do just about anything including running system commands. Always be sure and trust your script writer before pushing that magic button.
